# Graduate Advising ## expand\_more In my capacity as a graduate advisor, I regularly meet one-on-one with my students to offer advice when selecting courses and, in later years, a topic for their dissertation. I also provide close supervision as the students learn how to conduct original research and sustain an argument across a multi-chaptered work. This includes guiding the students as they select relevant primary sources, conducting a thorough literature review, and developing a research plan with realistic deadlines. I also use my advising meetings to work closely with the students in analyzing the biblical text in Hebrew, so as to ensure that the student can critically reflect on issues of vocabulary, morphology, syntax, and style, while also exploring important questions concerning the historical development of the biblical traditions. As an advisor I also place strong emphasis on professional development, in the hope that I might help prepare my students for a successful career after they complete their graduate program. Every semester, I host bi-weekly “team meetings” for my advisees (both graduate and postgraduate), during which the students meet together in my office and take turns sharing drafts of forthcoming conference papers or essays that they wish to submit to peer-reviewed journals. Beyond these group meetings, I also meet individually with students to provide practical assistance with professional matters such as job applications and abstract submissions. I am also an active member of various Harvard workshops that foster the academic and professional development of graduate students. I am one of the faculty advisors of the [GSAS Hebrew Bible Workshop](https://nelc.fas.harvard.edu/hebrew-bible-workshop) that meets twice a month (on average) throughout the semester, and which hosts a mixture of student and faculty papers as well as professional development workshops. I am an active member of [Ancient Studies at Harvard](https://ancientstudies.harvard.edu/ancient-studies-people) and the Religions of the Ancient Mediterranean workshop, which allow me to interact with students working in adjacent fields, such as Ancient History or New Testament and Early Christianity.
